Who we are

MMD UK is a group of people living in the UK who identify and support the ideals of the MMD party and the new deal administration in Zambia. In other words, MMD UK is a tributary of the MMD Party in Zambia.

Our vision is to act as a beacon of the MMD party in the UK. In order to achieve this, MMD UK seeks to liaise with the MMD NEC in Lusaka through regular contacts with the secretariat in order to keep up to date with the party's activities at grass root level. In this way, the MMD UK could act as a direct source of information about party activities to its members in the UK. Key issues of interest to the party members in the UK will be regularly published on the MMD UK website. A detailed list of MMD UK activities will be maintained on this website too.

It is our view that in the long term, the MMD UK could be used as a resource pool for party research on key policy matters and be seen as a one stop contact for testing people's views on key policies. It is hoped that the MMD UK would also be a strategic organisation for facilitating a harmonious working relationship between MMD members in the UK and staff at the Zambia High Commission, who represent the Zambian MMD government. The MMD UK fully understands that the Zambia High Commission is a non-partisan institution which is meant to support all Zambian nationals in the UK. However, the ZHC also has a special relationship with the ruling party of the day, whose benefits could be mutual to both the party and the MMD government. Using this relationship, MMD UK hopes that its input to the government policy making institutions could be facilitated.

Critical to some of the works MMD UK seeks to undertake are institutional capacity building projects in various constituencies in Zambia. It is our desire to support as many grass roots projects in the country as possible and in this way, help strengthen the party at grass root level without any bias. We believe that our strategic position in the UK could allow us to solicit financial support from diverse sources and through the party secretariat, channel these resources to targeted project areas in Zambia. Specifically, MMD UK views education and leadership development among party members as a key starting point. Within its means, MMD seeks to support leadership education and development projects to help party members understand party leadership and governance. By building special relationships with similar organisations in the UK, we hope to build a working image of the MMD party in Zambia and similar organisations in the UK on the basis of shared vision and collective responsibility. Such ideals are easily identifiable as Zambia has since signed up to uphold the key Millenium Development Goals (MDGs).
